Emily Goodwin MD

Area Director; Greenville, South Carolina

Dr. Emily Goodwin is originally from Alabama, but she moved to Greenville, South Carolina to attend Furman University. After graduating, she went to the University of South Carolina (USC) School of Medicine in Columbia to pursue her dream of being a doctor. As an M1 student, she participated in her first CMDA meeting. She fondly remembers a small group of Christian medical students who met weekly on campus over brown bag lunches. It was CMDA that inspired her to persevere, and it was through CMDA that she met her best friend, Peter Goodwin. Emily and Peter served as officers the following year. The pair married while completing their final years of medical school on the Greenville campus of the USC School of Medicine.

After medical school, Drs. Emily and Peter Goodwin couples-matched into residencies in Birmingham, Alabama. Emily studied pediatrics, and Peter pursued ophthalmology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). In Birmingham, they witnessed the profound impact CMDA could make on a community as the local chapter hosted weekly meetings for single and married healthcare professionals. Emily and Peter recall that their CMDA experience in residency awakened them to the necessity for intentional Christian fellowship and spiritual growth amid rigorous medical training.

After completing residencies at UAB, the Goodwins were able to train together in Philadelphia for fellowships—Emily in pediatric oncology-hematology at the University of Pennsylvania and Peter in retina research and oncology at Will’s Eye Hospital. In contrast to Birmingham, Emily remembers what it was like to face tough challenges and persecution in medical training without the presence of CMDA. Today, she and Peter are grateful for their academic experiences as well as times of personal discouragement that produced their present passion for CMDA.

Though they are busy with careers and raising their four beautiful children back in Greenville, the Goodwins consider it a privilege to serve South Carolina’s Upstate chapter of CMDA and have seen the Lord substantially growing student participation in the ministry at Greenville’s new USC School of Medicine. “Please join CMDA,” says Emily, “as we educate and motivate the next generation to be ‘Transformed Doctors, Transforming the World.’”
