Don Helfer, MD
GHO Specialty Coordinator
Don Helfer, MD, is the current anesthesia co-coordinator (along with Ray Alonge, CRNA) for GHO. Don lives in Farmington, New Mexico with his wife Sandra. They have three children, Hannah, Olivia and Nathaniel. Don was born and raised in central Illinois and he graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS in Chemistry. He attended medical school at Washington University in St. Louis where he became involved with CMDA.
He completed a residency in anesthesiology at the same institution and has been in practice since 1989. Don has been on many short-term medical mission trips to Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Zimbabwe. He also worked on the Navajo reservation for a year. Don welcomes any questions pertaining to anesthesia on the GHO trips and will do his best to find the answers to them.
