Connections

“Jesus replied, ‘If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him’” (John 14:23, NIV 1984).

“One day as I was leaving work, a young Christian medical assistant with whom I work asked me if I would pray for her and her boyfriend to become fertile as they had been together seven years and she has been ready to have a baby but has been unable to get pregnant. She added that her boyfriend does not believe in God but he is supportive of her faith and they just basically don't address that together. I talked briefly about the infertility issue and then asked if I could pray for her right then, and she agreed. I was able to gently ask the Lord to meet her deepest desires (as He made her and knew those): to provide, if it was His will, for her to be able to have a baby, but also for God to turn her boyfriend's heart toward Himself so they could believe together. I prayed for God's best plan—that her boyfriend might agree to marriage with my friend so that any baby God provided would get to grow up in a family that would be able to nurture it to also know Him.”
—Lavonne Johnston, physician assistant

What a beautiful testimony, a mature Christian physician assistant nurturing in love an immature Christian medical assistant at the level of her deepest needs, toward a life centered in God’s will. This medical assistant was immature in her faith, just as we all are in different areas of our lives. Sometimes we hold tightly to the Person of Christ and miss the connection between our love for the Person and the way we live. We end up living disconnected lives. Some disconnections are easy to spot, like sexual activity outside of marriage. Many others, just as dangerous to God’s redemptive plan, are more difficult to see and difficult to accept, especially when we are examining our own lives. Jesus was amazingly clear, describing many areas of our lives where our love for Him should connect with our behavior. One list of Jesus’ teachings that should connect with our love for Him was posted on the website http://www.thegospeltruthministry.com/. Here are 10 of the 50 posted:

  1. Repent - Matthew 4:17
  2. Follow me - Matthew 4:19
  3. Honor God’s Law - Matthew 5:17-18
  4. Do Not Commit Adultery - Matthew 5:29-30
  5. Keep Your Word - Matthew 5:37
  6. Love Your Enemies Matthew 5:44
  7. Seek First God’s Kingdom - Matthew 6:35
  8. Judge Not - Matthew 7:1-2
  9. Fear Not - Matthew 10:28
  10. Deny Yourself - Luke 9:23

Jesus said, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come make our home with him.” There is a connection between our loving and our doing.

Dear Father,
Please let me live in obedience to your teachings, that I may find you more often home with me.
Amen
