Bringing Heaven to Earth

God has given each of us a purpose in life. Starting with the big picture, it is to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. And secondly, we are to love our neighbor as ourselves.
Since the world has been corrupted by our separation from God, it has become, in a sense, hell. Hell is a place that is separation from God, and heaven is being with God. Our world is currently a mixture of the two.
I have heard people unknowingly say, this must be heaven—and under different circumstances say, this must be hell. They may be closer to the truth than they realize.
One day, heaven and earth will come together. Jesus will return and all the sin, pain and suffering will be gone. When Jesus came, He began that process by healing the sick and offering the eternal presence of God, or heaven.
As followers of Jesus, we are asked to do the same. We are to help bring heaven to earth by following Jesus’ footsteps. That can be in many ways.
Those of us in the healthcare field can offer, among other things, healing. Although we have discovered how to help people heal through “modern medicine,” I see it as a gift from God. But I see our calling beyond that.
I see loving our neighbor by treating them with respect and love. I ask myself, how would I want to be treated? It may be by saying “God bless you.” With an attitude of love, it may be a word of encouragement or sharing something from God’s Word that may help them on the journey of finding or more fully knowing God. It could be a hug. It could be buying lunch for the person behind you in line.
By loving the people beyond what would normally be expected, we are helping God bring heaven to earth.
Do you have an example of a kind act that you could share?
