Trip Details:
After much planning, we are happy to let you be among the first to know WIMD has planned a wonderful trip in partnership with Global Health Outreach (GHO) that will truly bless the participants and make a difference in the lives of girls and women caught in human trafficking in Managua, Nicaragua. We will be working at House of Hope, an amazing place where the physical, spiritual, economic, and educational needs of women in sex slavery (both girls who have been trafficked and women trapped in prostitution) are addressed.
You can learn more about this ministry: http://www.houseofhopenicaragua.com/ .
Important details:
We will return on Saturday, rather than the usual Sunday, so that you have time to get organized to return to work on Monday.
Mission Focuses: Providing the medical needs in a Christian context for:
- the women and children who live at the House of Hope
- the prostitutes within the city who come to the House of Hope for worship, bible study and microenterprise skills
- the surrounding community including the Christian school next door. We will be adding an additional 1/2 day of medical clinic for the community at their request.
Medical Content: Outpatient medical (will not include major surgical procedures)
Team Leader: Gloria Halverson, MD, who has been involved in three previous trips to the House of Hope and is actively involved in human trafficking work.
Lodging: Quinta Primavera, a Mennonite guesthouse where we will also take most of our meals and have times of fellowship together.
Personnel: 22 - 28 team members, including
- 3 - 4 Ob/Gyn
- 3 - 4 Pediatricians
- 2 - 4 Primary Care Physicians
- 3 Dentists (one of these spots can be a dental hygienist to do cleanings)
- 1 pharmacist
- 2 Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants
- 3 - 4 nurses
- 1 - 2 cytotechnicians
- 3 - 4 personnel to assist in the pharmacy, triage, dental clinic and public health education
- 1 - 2 Pastors (to take an active part in the Spiritual aspect of the team and work with the National Partners/Spiritual Counseling).
- 1 Physical Therapist
- 2 medical students/residents
While this trip is co-sponsored by Women in Medicine and Dentistry and the needs of the clientele are predominantly for female providers, men are invited to appy and it is important for several to be a part of this team.
Language Requirements: Spanish helpful but not necessary as translators will be available. We anticipate most participants will not be fluent in Spanish.
We expect this trip to fill quickly, based on our previous experience and on the number of women who have already expressed interest. If you are interested, sign up soon! You will be informed by the end of August if you have been selected for this team (once you appy). Participants will be chosen based upon the order of their applications and the needs of the team.
Vaccination Information: Wondering what immunizations you’ll need for the mission trip? Please refer to the Centers for Disease Control website.
