Trip Details: Our GHO team is going to a new location this June outside San Salvador. In June 2011, our team had lunch up on the mountains at Las Brumas Grill and Cafe on a coffee farm. The owner described the great needs for medical care in this region. There are over 60,000 people close by who have little access to medical care. She agreed to help with the arrangements such as setting up a large tent or tents on a local soccer field. We will drive the 30 minutes from San Salvador to the clinic location. We will be close to San Salvador Volcano (inactive) and the Las Brumas Grill and Café.
The Mendez family describes the area on their web site: “Located in the San Salvador Volcano area at a height of 1640 meters(1776 feet) with a pleasant climate that holds 17 degrees Celsius average (about 63 degrees Farenheit). Pathways of coffee, fresh air, singing birds, forests, flowers, butterflies and a majestic volcano and tranquility is the environment under which they have built Las Brumas Grill and Café.” It is in this environment in a tent that we will conduct our medical and dental clinics. There are few churches in this area; I noted one catholic church when we drove up to the area.
Our wonderful partners in San Salvador are Rene Mejia Vides and Rene Gonzales serving a sparkling evangelical church in the city. Many people from the church come as helpers, cooks and evangelists. The church sponsors a grade 1-12 Christian School. It is from the senior class that we have translators. I have found this connection to be marvelous. The kids speak excellent English, have a strong Christian faith and enjoy life.
There will be new challenges in going to a new area in El Salvador. I believe it will be well worth the extra effort to provide healthcare and public health teaching to this group of needy people most of whom are subsistence farmers or work for a large farm.
Come partner with us as we go to this beautiful, small nation in Central America. Often older teen agers come with parents for a maturing experience for all involved. Join us in 2012! Dwain Illman, Team Leader
