Trip Details: This team works with the Verbo Church from Cuenca, Ecuador. GHO has a long history of successful trips working throughout this beautiful country. The team is known locally as "the doctors who pray" because we offer prayers throughout the clinic process. What a great compliment! Because we work in the Andes Mountians at elevations that range from 5000 to 8000 ft. above sea level, daily temperatures range from overnight lows in the upper 50's to 60's with high temps in the 70's to lower 80's (almost perfect). Travel plans are to fly in and out of Quito, with an overnight on each end of our trip.
In 2009, in addition to primary healthcare, we began a strategic emphasis on Community Health Education (CHE). Several team members copied free materials available at www.hepfdc.info to use in training local church members and patients in simple good living practices that when followed, can greatly improve their health. Our CHE team presented good health information to over 1300 individuals in small 2-6 person sessions during our visit. We also trained 12 local church members in CHE for ongoing teaching which can open the door for evangelism.
Another highlight is our emphasis on individual spiritual counseling again using local church members. Every person meets with a mature believer or pastor so they receive a spiritual and sometimes emotional "checkup" as well as a medical one.
Our tentative plans call for us to work 2 weeks near Loja in southern Ecuador in small communities like Cuenca and Catamayo. We fly in and out of the nearby Loja airport. The accommodations are excellent, the food is delicious, the fellowship within the team is sweet, and most important, the spiritual and medical needs are great.
All types of medical providers are needed as well as several support personnel. We need 8 medical providers, 4 nurses, 6 logistics (non-medical helpers), plus surgical staff and dental care providers and pastors.
