Healthcare for the PoorThe Four Percent Solution
CMDA takes seriously God’s call to us regarding our responsibility to care for the poor, both in this country and overseas. We, as American doctors, have been blessed beyond most people in the world; and, therefore, have a greater responsibility than most to listen and act when we hear that call. CMDA has developed a two fold strategy to address this responsibility. First, we are partnering with Christian Community Health Fellowship to motivate and educate our students and doctors to serve the poor in domestic health care clinics for the poor. Secondly, we have developed the initiative called, “The 4% Solution” to challenge all of our doctors to give 4% of their money or time in service to the needs of the poor, either in the U.S. or overseas.
In the 4% Solution, we are asking doctors to be faithful to their local churches with their tithe, and then give in a sacrificial way, motivated by their love for Christ, 4% more in one of the following ways:
1. Spend 2 weeks a year in overseas mission work that directly impacts the healthcare, housing, job skills or nutrition of the poor. Options include GHO, MEI, or other missions organizations through the doctors’ local churches and denominations.
2. Accept 1 uninsured patient out of every 25 patients seen in the office. Specialists may accept these patients as consultation referrals from clinics for the underserved.
3. Serve 8 hours per month in a healthcare clinic for the poor in the U.S.
4. Contribute 4% of net profits above the church tithe to the poor, through the church, through CMDA or through another organization that serves the physical or social needs of the poor.
5. Deliberately care for more Medicaid patients than your colleagues.
6. Any combination of the above to equal 4% of your time, talent and treasure. CMDA is in the process of developing the plan and the resources to implement this initiative. We would love to come to your cities and your churches to challenge your colleagues sometime in the next two years.
