Trip Details: Hanoi, Institute of Odontostomatology
& Maxillofacial Surgery
We have had the privilege of visiting the Hanoi, Institute of
Odontostomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery since 1996 and we have
greatly enjoyed their hospitality and collegiality. On this project we
have two divisions within our team, the first being a dental division
(composed of general dentists, periodontists, endodontists,
orthodontists, prosthodontists who have a heart and desire to share
their knowledge and expertise with national doctors). This is a great
opportunity for dental specialists and general dentists to serve,
teaching clinical skills and lecturing to small groups of national
doctors. The second division is a maxillofacial/plastic surgical
division (Anesthesiologists, surgical nurses, techs, and scrub nurses,
maxillofacial and plastic surgeons), and we have been blessed to have a
partnership with the Mayo Clinic in this area.
We spend our entire time in Hanoi with a very aggressive schedule of
clinic and OR, and with our dentists assisting national doctors in the
clinic and lecturing in the afternoon. Our operating room surgical team
evaluates patients on the Sunday that we arrive in Hanoi and throughout
the next few days for scheduling through out the week. Clinic and
operating room schedules continue from Monday through Thursday; Friday
is a day of lectures. National doctors who are invited from the northern
area of Vietnam come and hear lectures by the anesthesia, surgical and
dental participants of the team. It is a rather intense but a very worth
while week. Our partners on the project from the Mayo Clinic, Dr Uldis
Bite and Dr. Bill Tran from the Plastic Surgery Department, have
contributed greatly to the establishment of a microsurgical (vascular
and neurosurgical) capability in the Institute. The anesthesiologists
have contributed greatly to the quality of care and expertise of the
national doctors as they have lectured, exchanged ideas and brought to
the Institute some very valuable equipment.
In spite of the busy schedule there is still time to do some shopping
for silk items, clothing, and gifts for family and friends. Our
relationship and commitment to the Institute will continue and we look
forward to providing this excellent opportunity for service and
“walking the talk” with our surgical teams, general dentists
and dental specialists.
