Trip Details: Human trafficking is horrific,
growing in numbers, and unfortunately, a global phenomenon. It is
nothing less than modern human slavery. The most common form of
trafficking is the sale of women and children for sex and is defined by
the U.S. government as a commercial sex act that is induced by
“force, fraud or coercion” or in which the person induced to
perform the act has not yet reached the age of 18.
While not all prostitution is sex trafficking, they are closely
entwined, and all women in prostitution are exploited in one of several
ways. These women are ignored by mainstream society and their needs are
often unmet. As Christian physicians and dentists, we are able to do a
great service to these women and their families by attempting to address
their mental and physical health needs. We will be doing just that on
this trip by helping a Christian outreach to prostitutes in
Managua, Nicaragua called House of Hope. House of Hope (HOH) is
working to provide shelter and an alternative to prostitution for women
in Managua. We will be taking a team to Managua to work with the HOH
from January 23 - 31, 2010.
We are looking for an ideal team of about 15 team members consisting
of: 2 OB/GYN, 2 Pediatricians, 2 Family Practice, 1-2
Dentists for primarily restorative work, a pharmacist, 3-4 nurses,
and 3-4 logistics folks to help in the pharmacy, triage, dental clinic
and public health education, 1 - 2 Pastors (to take an active part
in the Spiritual aspect of the team and work with the National
Partners/Spiritual Counseling).
Lodging will be at Quinta Primavera a very pleasant guest house for
mission groups located very near the House of Hope.
Our host is April Havlin, Director of House of Hope, who will
coordinate working with the potential patients consisting of the
resident families she has at House of Hope, the prostitutes that come
one day a week from Managua and their extended families, and the
students from the Christian school next door and their families, as the
former prostitutes’ children attend this school. This will make
for a full week with these various components of patients. You can
learn more about this ministry: http://www.houseofhopenicaragua.com/.
Vaccination Information: Wondering what
immunizations you’ll need for the mission trip? Please refer to
the Centers for Disease
Control website.
