Trip details: The team will fly to
Chihuahua, Mexico together from our U.S. departure city. We
will be met by our host, Pastor Jorge Ramirez. Our ministry will be
among the Tarahumara people in the Sierra Tarahumara mountain region of
Chihuahua. We will also be working with Dr. Miranda,
the regional medical director as well as local nurses and
missionaries. The team will spend the first night in Chihuahua.
After some orientation and worship time on Sunday, the team will travel
to Creel where we will base for our medical clinics which will be held
in several surrounding villages. In Creel we will stay in a lodge
with hotel type rooms. We will also have a day to see the
beautiful Copper Canyon before heading back to Chihuahua
to begin our trip home.
Ministry overview: Jorge Ramirez serves
as an international partner with GO InterNational, our partner ministry
for this team. He is a pastor and church planter and founder of Sobre La
Roca Missions, serving the Tarahumara Indians.
He writes “We have been serving the Tarahumara people for the
past 15 years, and have established local contact with missionaries and
different Tarahumara people and their villages. Their needs are great.
They have no running water, electricity, gas or telephone. They live off
the land and grow crops. Mostly corn and beans, and depend on the rain
for water. Winter is very cold (below 0 C) and summer is rainy season.
We will be at temperatures in the 70's day time, and 50's at night time.
You can get more info on local Tarahumara images on the web site:
Tarahumara Indians. You can look up City of Creel and Copper
Canyon. There are approximately 130,000 Tarahumara people in the region
of the Sierra Madre Mountains. They have 5 different dialects they
speak. 90% of them do not read or write. We work, in some regions,
through interpreters, but 70% of them speak Spanish.”
