Trip Details: The CMDA Dermatology Section will
have its third Global Health Outreach (GHO) Mission trip to
Valladolid, Mexico. This trip continues our 3 - 4 year commitment
to have an ongoing dermatology ministry by providing dermatological care
to the Valladolid area indigent residents and to also provide
dermatological education to the area health care providers. GHO is
partnering with International Medical Assistance Missions www.ima-missions.org founder and director Dr.
Roberto Rodriguez (surgeon and former president of CMDA Mexico).
Dr. Jerry Ariail is the dermatology team leader. Dr. Ariail was
the 2008 GHO Dermatology Team Leader to Valladolid. He has
previously been team leader for a Presbyterian Church in America's
Mission to the World team to Corozal, Belize and a World Medical Mission
team to Manzini, Swaziland. He has participated with GHO teams to
Kabul, Afghanistan and Riobamba, Ecuador and also MTW teams to
Merida, Mexico and also to Acapulco, Mexico.
Valladolid (pronounced bah-yah-do-LEED) is a beautiful 16th century
colonial city in the center of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. With a
population of 50,000, Valladolid is a relatively modern city surrounded
by Mayan Indian villages with some of Mexico's neediest and underserved
people. Living in one room pole huts with thatch roofs, no
plumbing, in abject poverty with little hope of improvement, these needy
families are profoundly grateful to those who come to help them.
Our team intends to offer dermatological care to these Mayan villagers
and to share the Good News message of God's love.
Currently there are no dermatologists in the Valladolid area, but the
local family practice physicians, pediatricians, and nurses are
interested in what dermatological training we can provide.
Our team will depart Saturday, January 10, 2009 for Cancun,
Mexico. From Cancun we will take a 2 - 3 hour bus ride to
Valladolid where we will be staying at the Hotel Zaci. All rooms
are air conditioned and provide private baths. Sunday will be a
time for worship with a local church whose pastor ministered to our
first team's patients. On Sunday afternoon we will visit
Chichen-Itza, the most famous site and the most visited Mayan ruin on
the peninsula. Activities for the next 4-1/2 days will include
general derm clinics, derm surgery clinics, and dermatology
presentations to the local medical community. Prayer with each
patient will be a special opportunity to communicate the Good
News. Each morning we will have a time of devotions with the GHO
Orthopedic Team during breakfast and then will leave for the clinic
around 8:00 AM. We will usually return around 6:00 PM. Dr.
Rodriguez will accompany us along with translators and local
pastors. Dr. Rodriguez's wife, Norma, and his son, Ricardo, will
also be present to help support both our group and also the GHO
Orthopedic team. Plenty of safe food and water will be provided
with an excellent breakfast and evening meal near the Valladolid
hospital. On Friday afternoon we will travel back to Cancun for
1-1/2 days and 2 nights at the Marriott Hotel. This final portion
of our trip will provide us with a time for de-briefing along with time
for rest and relaxation before our departure, Sunday morning, January
18.
The project fee is $1,300 which covers room, board, ground
transportation and other project expenses. Airfare is not included
in the project fee.
We request your participation in as many ways as the Lord leads
you:
1) We URGENTLY NEED
additional participants. One or two additional dermatologists
would be most helpful. Support staff including nurses,
pharmacists, photographer/audio-visual person, and logistics helpers is
actively being recruited. Spouses and children age 12 and older
are most welcome.
2) Prayer support is the most important contribution that you
can provide. Some specific prayer requests are:
a. For Dr. Rodriguez as he works with the
many challenges to make the arrangements for this new
ministry
b. For receptive hearts in the indigenous
believing health care trainees to embrace this new long term
ministry
c. For team flexibility and patience
d. For team receptiveness to God’s
will and plans for our trip
3) You may participate financially for the following specific needs
(other than project fees) by mailing a tax-deductible contribution
payable to: CMDA Dermatology Section, c/o Christopher Wilbers, MD,
Secretary/Treasurer, 4834 S. Bellhurst Ave., Springfield, MO
65804. IMPORTANT: When donating for this trip,
include “Mexico Missions Trip” on the check’s memo
line.
a. For costs of educational books for
indigenous trainees
b. For the purchase of in country
medications (current Mexico requirement)
c. To sponsor another individual such as a
nurse, pharmacist, audio-visual/photographer, or logistics
individual
d. To purchase (or donate) digital camera
for ongoing teledermatology
e. To purchase (or donate) biopsy kits
NOTE: All payments for trip fees are to
be sent to GHO, P.O. Box 7500, Bristol, TN 37621.
