training. You may disregard the portions of the application
dealing with a normal foreign country mission trip.
Training Details: The cataract is the main
cause of curable blindness worldwide with the developing world
accounting for three quarters of blindness. In our desire to reach
the least the last and the lost, specifically those spiritually and
physically blind in the developing world, we have organized a training
opportunity to equip ophthalmologists and all other eye care
professionals. Those who ordinarily (in their practices in the States)
use very specialized equipment and technology are in need of a different
training to be successful on mission trips into developing countries. It
is our desire to promote excellence in cataract surgery and the
treatment of eye diseases in developing countries. In order to
accomplish these goals we are planning special training sessions
including didactic presentations, a wet lab, and mini-clinic for the
transfer of current skills and techniques in manual small
incision cataract surgery for surgeons from both the developed
and developing world.
It is reported that more than 20 million people are bilaterally blind
from age-related cataracts, which represents 43% of all blindness in the
world. It is estimated that the world population of those over 60 years
of age will be around 800 million by 2020. As a calculative
figure, 1000 new bilaterally blind people from cataracts per one million
persons per year is used for purposes to plan operations on an annual
basis—and this just to reduce the backlog.
We will teach a safe, low-cost procedure (Manual Small Incision Cataract
Surgery) that has been developed for use in the developing countries. We
will also be reviewing the use of Phacoemulsification in these
situations. This allows us to reduce dramatically the causes of
poor outcomes and increase the output of cataract services.
We are planning our first workshop January 16th, 2010 in Bristol,
Tennessee at the headquarters of CMDA. (Note: You will need to
arrive in Bristol on the 15th and leave on the 17th as we will be in
clinic the entire day of the 16th.) We will have a full day of lectures
and a wet lab. This will be followed by a mini-clinic in
Vallodolid, Mexico Feb. 26th - 27th (arrival on the 25th and
departure on the 28th) and a full week in the Yucatan area in April
(these clinics will be posted at a later date
online).
We know this first one day workshop (Jan. 16th) will be a condensed
and fruitful learning experience for all surgeons participating and
valuable training to maximize your skill and expertise. It
is important to sign up early as there are limited spots
available.
Please contact Dr. Sam Molind via his cell 423-367-4551 with
