Dr. Hawkins was born March 20, 1930 in the home of his maternal
grandmother, on North Briscoe Street in Tulia, Texas. Hart Texas, where
Dr. Hawkins grew up, was and is a small farming community near
Plainview, Texas. There were only 6 in his graduating class in 1947.
He attended 2 years of college at West Texas State University to play
intramural basketball while taking an intensive course in building
trades to get his apprentice carpenter's certificate. Upon completing
this 2-year course, at a crossroads in decisions and with the blessing
of his parents, he transferred to Baylor University in Waco, Texas for
premedical education – completing his degree in 1956. In May 1955,
he joined the Christian Medical & Dental Society. Internship and
Residency in Urology followed at Hermann Hospital, Houston, Texas. Dr.
Hawkins practiced Urology in Kerrville, Texas from 1961 to 1993 at Sid
Peterson Memorial Hospital.
His first overseas mission experience was with CMS through MAP, to
Ethiopia in December 1969. There he taught and lectured in Urology at
The Christian Doctor's Conference in Addis Ababa and in several outlying
hospitals across Ethiopia. He has taken many weeklong medical trips with
the Texas River Ministry along the Rio Grande, beginning in 1968 and
continuing even now.
In 1984 Dr. Hawkins was invited to Ogbomosho Baptist Hospital to
teach open prostatectomy without transfusions or irrigations by a former
nurse from the hospital in Kerrville, now missionary to Nigeria. A video
of this simple technique was finally made in 1990 and has been widely
distributed to interested missionaries (up to 50 copies through CMDA and
ICMDA contacts). This video is now being converted to DVD format.
Since 2003 Dr. Hawkins has lead three Urology Surgery Projects to
Chiapas, Mexico, aided by Dr. Roberto Rodriguez, MD, FACS of Monterrey,
Mexico. These teams primarily concentrate on TURP's.
