Cheryl Durstein Decker is a graduate of the Medical College of
Georgia and completed an emergency medicine residency at the University
of Washington and Madigan Army Medical Center program in 1999. She has
worked in emergency departments and presently is the associate medical
director for After Hours Pediatrics, Inc in Florida.
Through her church, First Baptist of Clermont FL, she learned of an
evangelical ministry in Burkina Faso, W. Africa…Shattering
Darkness, Inc. In 2002, she accompanied her pastor and a team to join
this ministry in the first showings of the” Jesus” film
newly translated into the Dagara tribal language.
While on this trip, God touched her heart concerning the incredible
medical need in this country. Burkina Faso is one of the 5 poorest
countries on earth, for most Dagara, medical care is non-existent.
Cheryl has made 3 subsequent trips with medical teams in support of the
Shattering Darkness ministry.
As a long time CMDA member, she feels God is calling her to
coordinate with GHO to bring more medical/dental care teams. She has
seen God bless past medical trips in 2 ways. Many are physically healed
and God uses this to soften the hearts of the people who primarily
worship idols, preparing them for spiritual healing. Many come to Christ
during and after each medical team’s visit.
Cheryl is married to Larry, an OB-Gyn and they have 6 cats! She and her
husband are ironman triathletes. Cheryl is active in her church and has
lobbied in Washington concerning USAID appropriations for malaria, the
most prevalent disease in Burkina Faso. She encourages you to go to the
website www.shatteringdarkness.org to see pictures and video
from past trips as well as learn about this vital ministry.
