CMDA Southern Region Report
By Will Gunnels, Southern Regional Director
Progress Notes: May/June 2010
As I look over the vast expanse of the great CMDA
southern region, quite frankly I am almost “wordless.”
That is sort of like being speechless in front on a computer screen with
your hands over the key board. I really don’t know where to
start. So I guess I will start at the very beginning…
This fall, over 7000 (my estimate) new first year
students will journey to their first year of medical and dental
school. Right now, first year students are getting the final
serious break of their training. Second years are taking boards
and getting ready to start their clinical rotations. They already
consider themselves third year students. The third year students
are now veterans of their clinical training, and are getting serious
about what residency program they will pick and wondering who will pick
them. The fourth years aren’t anymore, as they are new grads
heading to the big next step, which may or may not mean relocating
physically, but will surely mean relocating professionally. This
ongoing merry-go-round of training is my life, as I try to connect with
new leaders, and try to stay connected with old one.
As I look at the 75 campuses in the region I wonder how
all of these incoming students will be greeted and warmly welcomed with
some kind of Christian hospitality? Will those with faith choose
to follow Jesus through their training or cave in to the awful false god
of medicine? Will those without faith hear a credible witness
while in school? During their training will they get to spend
serious time with a doctor who is serious about both their faith and
medicine? Will those who come in married leave still married (and
to the same spouse)? Will those who want to be missionary docs on
the front side pursue missions when it is all over? Will their
next four years have the same drastic changes in the healthcare world
that last month’s graduates have seen?
Writing these words (yes, real words!) is helping me
refocus my vision and passion to influence the next generation of
Christian docs. If it gets you fired up as well, and you would
like to help the cause in some way, please get in touch with
me.
For Him,
Will Gunnels

CMDA Single's Ministry
Winter Conference - February 13-20, 2011
We invite you to join a wonderful group of docs (and allied health
professionals) for several events every year. Our flagship event is our
winter conference in Buena Vista, CO where we lodge, eat and meet at
Trailwest, a beautiful Young Life Conference Center. We offer a creative
slate of activities everyday, including dog sledding, downhill skiing,
snow shoeing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, cross country skiing,
hiking, etc.
Our next winter conference takes place Feb 13-20, 2011. Jean Wright,
MD is our speaker. She is so popular among our group that this is her
third time in 15 years. Jean has testified before congress, the Vice
Premier of China and us! her specialty is Pediatric Anesthesia and she
is three board certified. In addition, she has a great sense of humor
and is a glutton for punishment. After all, did I mention that this is
her third trip back to speak to our group?
Jean adopted three girls from China will be bringing them with her.
We hope you will join us for this great week.
CMDA Singles on GHO Mission Trips
Also, we encourage CMDA single members who are doing GHO trips to inform
us when they plan to serve on a GHO team, so that other single
docs who desire to serve together can consider joining the same
team.
Also, from time to time, single docs vacation together as they plan
their own events, again using our network to inform others of their
plans.
We hope you take advantage of the single's network in CMDA to meet
and serve along side other single docs.
